Junior Cycle Physical Education

Physical Education in De La Salle Macroom

  • Through their study of PE students will develop:
  • Competence in a range of physical activities.
  • The ability to make decisions relating to physical activity while appreciating consequences in both tactical and moral contexts.
  • An understanding of the principles, rules and purpose of different sports.
  • An understanding of the psychological, sociological, and biological knowledge relevant to physical education.
  • An appreciation of the value of participation in selected physical activities as a lifelong endeavour.
  • An understanding of the principles of fairness and tolerance in interaction with others.
  • The desire and the capacity to acquire a positive sense of self.

Junior Cycle

Physical Education is offered to each junior cycle class for 2 x 40 minute periods per week.

At Junior Cycle a holistic approach is used in physical education with the aim of creating a fun, safe and enjoyable learning environment for all pupils. Teachers deliver a curriculum, under the new wellbeing programme, that gives each student the opportunity to be involved and succeed in physical education regardless of their abilities. This is done through a variety of active games whereby students’ develop key skills that can be applied, not only in sport but in everyday life such as teamwork and communication skills.

Health Related Fitness

Aussie Rules Football

Rounders

Ultimate frisbee

Soccer

Mini-hock

Olympic handball

Transition year

Transition year activities take place every Friday afternoon from 1.50 to 3.50.

During this time every week pupils take part in a number of sports related activities including:

Soccer

Self-defence

Outdoor Pursuits ( this involves spending three days in an adventure centre)

Gaa

Swimming

Squash

Golf

Boxing

Judo

Strength and conditioning classes

Mixed martial arts

  • Table tennis

Facilities

  • Basketball Court
  • Football Field
  • Dressing rooms
  • Equipment to cater for the sports mentioned
