Junior Cycle Geography

“Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments.” National geographic society

Geography is a compulsory subject for all junior cycle students. First years from 2018 onwards will sit a new geography course which involves a Classroom Based Assessment (CBA) in second and third year. This is worth 10% of the final grade with a final exam sat in June of third year. The CBAs are “Geography in the News” (based on a recent news event) and “My Geography” (based on a “local Study” – which could also include a field trip).

The remaining 90% of the geography grade is based on a final exam which will be taken in June of third year. Course material is based on three sections:

Section1; Exploring the Physical World

Section 2; Exploring how we interact with the physical world

Section 3; Exploring People, Place and Change.

This exam is taken at a common level and is assessed by the State Examinations Commission (SEC).
