Jim Quinn Memorial Cup   12/05/2022

Jim Quinn Memorial Cup

The inaugural Jim Quinn memorial cup was presented to Jude Murphy by Jim’s wife Phil, his daughter Eilis and his grandson Gearoid on the 10th of May. This was the first running of the competition, the 5k park run, for our second year students, as it had been cancelled the previous 2 years due to Covid restrictions. The second years put in a great effort and the impressive Jude Murphy came home first finisher.

Our dear friend Jim Quinn passed away on the 3rd of October 2019. For the 25 years previous, he had been a constant presence in De La Salle. On his daily visits he shared his athletic experience with our PE department and coached our athletics students in track and field.

His pleasant disposition, sense of humour, positivity, and encouraging nature made him a very popular person in De La Salle. Everyone loved to see Jim coming, he never failed to put a smile on our face. As an avid golfer, Jim trained the school golfing team and drove the students to events all over Cork in the school minibus. He also introduced many of the staff to the game over the years.

For Jim the glass was always half full, his encouragement to students allowed them to believe they were capable of achieving almost anything, and they sometimes did!

Jim’s passing is still felt each day in De La Salle, as we recall the many fond memories, of which there are many. The memorial cup will continue to keep his memory alive in the most appropriate way possible, students competing in sport.
