U16 Match Report

Recently, the De La Salle U16 team led by Shane Ryan and Cian Kiely travelled to Ballincollig to play Coláiste Choilm in the quarter-final of the U16 A county football championship.

This was De La Salle’s first competitive outing this season but they showed no signs of rust starting the game at a ferocious pace with De La Salle’s intentions clear to be seen. A Tom Browne led effort saw De La Salle lead Coláiste Choilm 0.04 to 0.00 at the first water break.

Coláiste Choilm attempted to grow into the game in the second quarter holding a little more of the ball but De La Salle were efficient in defence and attack transitioning quickly and working the space well. Despite Coláiste Choilm’s best efforts all they could manage was two frees. The half-time score was De La Salle 0.07 Coláiste Choilm 0.02.

Despite De La Salles’s dominance they weren’t happy and tore apart Coláiste Choilm in the third quarter. Two fast goals created beautifully and both finished by a razor-sharp Cian Kelleher. Tenacious and resiliant defending all across the two black lines for De La Salle and brilliant footballing ability displayed by Owen McCarthy and Ryan Sabas in midfield left the half time score 2.10 to 0.05.

The last quarter however told a different story Coláiste Choilm with a new sense of vigour rallied and started to dominate over a tiring De La Salle. De La Salle conceded multiple goal chances but an outstanding Cian Desmond kept Coláiste Choilm out. They did finally break through when they scored a penalty. This however was too little too late and De La Salle won out on the final score of 2.11 to 1.08

This result puts De La Salle’s men into the county semi-final set to be played in early December.

De La Salle Team: Cian Desmond, David Lynch, Fionn Kelleher, David O’Riordan, Séan O’Leary, Michael Downey, Cormac Bourke, Owen McCarthy, Ryan Sabas, Oisín O’Sullivan, Denis O’Mullane, Cian O’Sullivan, Luke Ring, Cian Kelleher and Tom Browne.
