Geography is an optional subject for senior cycle students. Students who select geography in transition year continue their studies through to sixth year.
In transition year, students are continuously assessed towards their final grade. Continuous assessment normally involves peer presentations on Leaving cert, topics as well as reports on fieldtrips carried out in fluvial and marine environments.
Senior cycle geography students study the core unit (physical and regional geography), the elective unit (economic geography) and the options unit (global interdependence-higher level only).
In Leaving Cert, students carry out a geographical investigation (GI) on one of the prescribed topics from the State Exams Commission. This is worth 20% of their final grade, with the final exam in June of sixth year worth 80%.Both the GI and the final exam are marked by the SEC.
