Temporary Accommodation   03/02/2020

It is with great pleasure that we wish to inform you that work on the construction of temporary accommodation has been sanctioned by the Department of Education & Skills and will commence in February.  The €1.4 million construction project will provide four general classrooms, a science laboratory, two ASD classrooms, two special education teaching rooms, a sensory room, a toilet block and 25 additional parking spaces.

This newly constructed building will be located in the school field within close proximity to the main office.  The increased student numbers have put a strain on the existing resources and this provision will help alleviate this pressure in the short term.  The need to provide suitable educational facilities has become more acute as a result of demographic changes resulting in an increase in the student population, significant residential development projects and the positive benefits of the Macroom bypass which will enhance the town and make it a primary location between the Cork city boundary and Killarney.

At a national level the 2nd level student population is due to increase by 50,000 between now and 2025. In 2024, for the first time since the founding of the State, there will be more students in second level than in primary level.

We are very hopeful that outstanding technical issues relating to our proposed green-field site can be addressed in the near future helping to pave the way for a new 500 pupil school to meet the 21st century needs of Macroom town and its hinterland
