Dessie Fitzgeralrd Presentation   22/11/2019

In keeping with our Positive Mental Health Awareness Month, this week Dessie Fitzgerald spoke to all our students about his life experience.

Dessie informed students about his life story, sharing the news that he lost two of his brothers in extremely shocking and tragic circumstances. A very short time later, Dessie was involved in an accident while playing hurling that resulted in him suffering a life changing spinal cord injury. All of this occurred within a period of just fourteen months. Despite such immense personal suffering, Dessie’s message to students was very much a positive one.

He spoke about removing the shame associated with being vulnerable, particularly for young men. He emphasised that despite our circumstances, we ultimately have a choice in how we live our lives, echoing sentiments shared by Philly McMahon two weeks ago. Most importantly, he stressed that each of us has made and continues to make valuable contributions, in some capacity, everyday.

Sincere thanks to Dessie for visiting our school Tuesday.

Special thanks also to Mr Fergus Ryan for organising the presentation.
