Corn Ui Mhuiri - First Round Match Report   06/11/2019

De La Salle started their senior football campaign with the Corn Uí Mhuirí first round in Mallow on Wednesday October 23rd against a strong Clonmel side.

De La Salle got off to a good start with Jack Kelleher scoring two early points. Shortly after Chris O’ Connell played a great ball through to Dylan Twomey who hammered it into the Clonmel net to put De La Salle up 1-02 to 0-01 inside the first ten minutes. Soon after Clonmel began to fight back and scored four points in the space of six minutes to level the game.

Towards the end of the first half, corner forward Daniel Cotter broke through the Clonmel defence but failed to finish and instead blasted it over the bar.

Some great spells of defending from the Hunt brothers David and Mark allowed minimum scores to be conceded. Full forward Jack Kelleher added another point before the break which allowed Macroom to leave the pitch with a two point lead 1-04 to 0-05.

The second half resumed with Clonmel winning the throw in and scoring two unanswered points to level the match including an effort on goal that came back off the post. Despite playing against the wind, Clonmel looked to be the more threatening side at this stage.

Mid way through the second half Clonmel were reduced to fourteen men when they received a red card for a high tackle on corner back James Galvin. This didn’t seem to effect Clonmel as they swiftly worked the ball to the opposite side and netted a goal to leave Macroom trailing by three points with only five minutes left. Some crucial interceptions by Daniel O’ Donovan and Cormac Buckley in the back line were much needed to keep De La Salle in the game. Scores were now difficult to come by in a wet and windy Mallow but up stepped Jack Kelleher to point another free followed by the two great kicks from Fionn Heffernan and Dylan Twomey deep into stoppage time to equalize the game.
