1A with their teachers Mr. Diarmuid Bolger and Ms. Jean O' Donovan
The students of 1A, De La Salle College were recently awarded gold medals and certificates for their distinguished participation in a Lasallian competition themed ‘Who is John Baptist de la Salle?’ The medals were presented to the students at Castletown, Co. Laois which is the headquarters of the De La Salle Brothers in Ireland.
Over the past number of months, the students have been investigating the legacy of St la Salle in the town of Macroom. They surveyed many past pupils including fathers, brothers, uncles, neighbours and even grandfathers on their memories of attending the college. They discovered that while John Baptist de la Salle never visited Ireland or, indeed Macroom, he nonetheless had a significant positive influence over the lives of the young men of the town. Many past pupils spoke of the quality education they received and the strict discipline of the brothers. Today, the spiritual gifts of St la Salle continue to be lived out and encountered by the pupils and staff of De La Salle College. The core principles of faith in the presence of God, respect for all persons, inclusive community, a quality education and concern for the poor and social justice are the essence of the Lasallian education.
